After formally approving the EU AI Act on March 13, 2024, the European Parliament created the world’s first comprehensive set of rules governing generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Likely to be enacted in May-June 2024 after receiving the final approval from the European Council, the phased-in approach begins. This presentation delves into the specifics of the EU AI Act, after setting the stage by looking at how NIST, ISO and the White House have defined AI and published guardrails for legal, ethical, and safe AI, as well as the potential application in conjunction with recently reenacted EU-US Privacy Shield. Notably, a person does not need a physical presence in the EU for the EU AI Act to apply.
