Session I - Foundations of Evidence – Heather King

This session explores the core principles of the Rules of Evidence, which govern the admissibility of evidence in court. Participants will learn about various types of evidence, from letters to emojis to artificial intelligence. The session focuses on how to admit or exclude evidence, including relevance, authentication, and hearsay. Participants will learn how the rules apply to various types of evidence to get it in or keep it out.

Session II - Advanced Evidence: Application and Techniques – Paul Leopold

In this session, participants will delve deeper into the practical aspect of presenting and excluding evidence. Different types of pretrial hearings will be discussed, including various evidentiary burdens at such hearings. Participants will also learn how to qualify or exclude experts, expert reports, and the materials experts have used, or the collaterals experts have interviewed. This session will also cover demonstrative evidence, how to use it, its limits, and how to make sure the appellate court can see what the jury or judge was looking at.
